Henry VII of England was only married once, to Elizabeth of York. His son Henry VIII was married six times. His marriages were primarily out of a need to have a male heir. His first wife, Catharine of Aragon, had the future Queen Mary I of England but had no male children that survived pass infancy, so he annulled their marriage. His second wife, Anne Boleyn, had the future Queen Elizabeth I of England, but also had no surviving male heirs, so she was accused and found guilty of incest, adultery, and treason. She was executed. His third wife Jane Seymour bore his the future King Edward VI of England, but she died during after the birth. Henry's fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, was married to him for a very short time, less than a year, before the marriage was annulled. They remained friends though and she was given an estate and referred to as "the King's beloved sister." Henry's fifth wife, Catherine Howard, also bore no children and committed adultery. For adultery and treason she was executed. Henry's sixth and final wife, Catherine Parr, remained married to Henry to his death but bore no children to him.
A critical reason for a male heir was that Henry's father, King Henry VII of England, had just taken power in England. Henry VIII was only the second Tudor king and a strong male heir was needed to maintain control of the crown. If there was a female heir, according to past history, the crown might be usurped and civil war could break out. This happened after the death of King Henry I of England, who's heir, Matilda of England, was ousted by Stephan of Blois quickly after Henry I's death. This event led to almost two decades of civil war. This was eventually disproven when Mary and Elizabeth were queens and they did not lose their crowns.
