Carter lost because Americans wanted a leader to make them feel good again. Carter appeared unable to lead the country in the face of a humiliating hostage crisis, energy crisis, runaway inflation and flagrant Soviet invasion of Afganistan. People thought the country was headed in the wrong direction and Carter could and would do nothing to reverse the course. Reagan, while he was more conservative than most Americans, seemed to have a plan for restoring American pride. He was optimistic, simplistic, eloquent, witty, confident and a great speaker--everything Carter wasn't. The third party candidate, John Anderson, was somewhere in between Carter and Reagan, but too middle of the road for an electorate hungry for a radiacal change.

During his time, the interest rates to borrow (increasing the bankers' profits) rose, but this improved the interest rates on savings accounts too. Businesses requiring the ability to borrow short term to make payments and payroll were stuck. Carter knew something about this had to be done, and told us so, but was being cautious, That was bad enough, running against a professional speech maker and actor (Ronald Reagan).

Then there was the (puppet dictator foisted on Mr. Carter) Shah Mohamed Reza Pahlavi of Iran. He was no spring chicken, and not in the best of health. In 1979, combining ill health and political unrest (in part from his "installation" in 1953 on the deposing of Mohamed Mossadeq, the elected "Prime Minister" (but not the effective head of state) of Iran for wanting to "Nationalize" the oil industry from the British), the Shah sough asylum in the United States, staying in New York Hospital until his passing a year and a half later. The Ayatollah Rouhollah Mousavi Khomeini returned from exile in France to such fanfare that the students from the religious school raided and overran the American Embassy, taking more than 400 hostages.

Jimmy Carter tried to effect a rescue, but with little concept of the environment the soldiers were going into, the equipment clogged with the desert dust and sand. The operation failed (and may have been the death-knell to his campaign). Meanwhile, Reagan had some of his oil-buddies (from/within/communicant) with the Saudi family negotiate their release on his inauguration (which was done).

Carter lost with his failed (poorly prepared) initiative to rescue the Americans held hostage, and a stagnant economy. If he had won, there would have been a lot of differences, but we will never know that now.

Jimmy Carter is still, and always shall be, "President Emeritus", and a spokesman for the best America can be, with his Nobel Peace Prize for being the negotiations intercessor for Yasser Arafat and Menachim Begin at Camp David. He is still active and a voice for reason (so rare these days), but sometimes a bit controversial. Still, that is his right in his position. In many African Communities, he is on of the "Great Elders", along with Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. African leaders turn to the "Great Fathers" for advice and a neutral negotiator in disputes between tribes, regions and Nations.
