Man has free will in order for him to love God. Without free will we are just robots or machines that can't do anything other than what we were made for. But since God gave us free will, we can choose to love Him. Luther and Calvin wanted man to be saved just by believing in God and not having to follow His Will, thus they denied free will, and as Luther said, "sin bravely, but believe even more bravely."
