Mary I was a religious fanatic and burned over 300 prominent (and also some very ordinary) Protestants. The official excuse given by the Roman Catholics for this was that they were burning dangerous heretics and were doing them a favor by destroying their bodies in the hope of saving their souls. The exact number of Protestants killed is unknown but it was over 300, mostly by burning at the stake.

She was trying to make her subjects go back to being Catholics and those that refused, she had them burned at the stake.
