Medusa was once a priestess in the Temple of Athena. She was renowned for her beauty, but had taken a vow of chastity because her patron goddess, Athena, was also the Goddess of Virgins. According to legend, she was raped inside the Temple of Athena by the god Poseidon. Since this behaviour was expected of Poseidon, Athena blamed Medusa for the rape, and the desecration of her temple, and punished her accordingly. Basically victimizing her (Medusa) a second time.
