Hernando Cotes wanted gold and riches because: gold was of high value. He belived that he could obtain it through the exploration of the Northenmost South America (where the axtecs were). he wanted to become rich is all and that he was probably greedy for the killing and tricking the aztecs.

∙ 13y agoThere were two sides as to why the Aztecs gave Hernán Cortés gifts of gold.
According to Cortés, the Aztecs had believed him to be either an emissary of Quetzalcoatl or Quetzalcoatl himself, who was a major Aztec deity. Therefore, they gave him lavish gifts in order to please him.
Another side was that Montezuma, the Aztec leader, wanted to figure out the Spanish conquistadors' weakness and crush them later. Having found that the weakness was greed, Montezuma showered the Spaniards with gold and other gifts and allowed them to plunder Aztec villages, so that he could distract them from the Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, and surprise them.
