Initially, Mother Teresa was sent to India by the Sisters of Loretto to teach in their schools. Once in that country she saw a greater need to help the poor and formed her own order off nuns - the Missionaries of Charity.
Mother Teresa did not actually make that choice. When she joined the Sisters of Loreto they could have sent her anywhere but decided to send her to India. The Sisters of Loreto could very well have kept her to work in Albania which is a country that is nearly 60 percent Muslim and only about 17 percent Christian. However, the sisters needed her to teach geography in India in their school for Catholics they had established. The Sisters of Loreto were primarily teachers and not into evangelizing. After about two decades teaching Mother Teresa received a new calling from God - to serve the poorest of the poor in India.
Mother Teresa did not actually make that choice, but was sent there when she joined the Sisters of Loreto. In any case, her home country, Albania, although poor and with many in need, was already Christian. Mother Teresa always saw her real mission as the conversion of non-Catholics.
