Winky was tasked with assisting and controlling Barty Crouch Jr after his father (Barty Crouch Sr) sneaked him out of Azkaban. Winky convinced Barty Sr to allow Barty Jr to attend the Quidditch World Cup, as a reward for good behaviour. To allow this to happen, Barty Jr wore an invisibility cloak while Winky stated she was saving a seat for her boss.
During the match. Barty Jr stole Harry Potter's wand from his back pocket. Later that night, he used the wand to cast the dark mark, the appearance of which instantly caused several ministry officials to apparate to the location and cast stunning spells - which caught Winky and the hidden Barty Jr.)
When a ministry official found Winky stunned next to Harry's wand, Barty Sr had no choice but to terminate Winky on the spot as it appeared she had stolen a wizards wand which was illegal. Another reason she was fired, was for failing to control Barty Jr - although nobody else could know this.
