Nicholas II did NOT welcome World War I. It was only after Austria tried to overrun Serbia that Nicholas went to Serbia's aid and was given an ultimatum by Germany, that Russia entered the war.

In WW 1, he was a low ranking enlisted soldier. Altho an Austrian, he enlisted in the Bavarian Army Reserve, and served as a courier/messenger. He probably enlisted for similar reasons to many young men in wartime- patriotism and excitement.
