Northern Ireland has never been part of Great Britain. Great Britain is the island with England, Wales and Scotland on it. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland. They are two separate island that have never been part of each other. What you are referring to is the United Kingdom, which is England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. A majority of people in the northern part of Ireland did not want to exit the United Kingdom in 1922. So there was a partition of the island creating what we now know as Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland stayed within the United Kingdom.

The whole of Ireland unified with Great Britain in 1801, to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Northern Ireland came to exist after the Irish war for independence, when that part of the country chose to remain in the UK, rather than go independent with the rest of Ireland. This was largely due to religious reasons; the majority of people in Great Britain and Northern Ireland were Protestant, while the majority in Ireland as a whole were Catholic. Therefore, the country was partitioned and the UK was renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

In 1921 a treaty was signed between Ireland and Britain, giving independence to most of Ireland. People in the northern part of Ireland did not want independence from Britain. This created partition, so when the treaty was implemented in 1922, Northern Ireland was created and was part of the United Kingdom, while what is now known as the Republic of Ireland became independent.

Northern Ireland never joined England. They are on two separate islands, so they have no physical connection. Politically, Northern Ireland and England, along with Wales and Scotland, are known as the United Kingdom. At one time all of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, until what is now called the Republic of Ireland became independent in 1922, which in the process created Northern Ireland. It is the part of the island of Ireland that is part of the United Kingdom.

Ireland did not join the UK. It was ruled by Britain, so became part of it for a period of time.

How come England won't give up Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland does not belong to England. The two of them, along with Scotland and Wales, form the United Kingdom. At present, the majority of people in Northern Ireland want to remain part of the United Kingdom. Until such time that that changes, it will remain part of the United Kingdom. England has no say in that.

When did the United Kingdom conquer Northern Ireland?

It didn't. When the Republic of Ireland left the UK in 1921, the people of what became Northern Ireland voted to remain part of the UK.

Does Scotland remain under Britain rule?

Scotland is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Is there an agreed timetable for England to leave Ireland to be governed by the Republic of Ireland?

No there isn't. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and will remain like that until the people of Northern Ireland want to change that.

What do the loyalists and republicans each want to happen to Northern Ireland?

Loyalists, and also unionists, refers to people in Northern Ireland that want Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom. They are "loyal" to the queen and want to remain in the "union". Loyalists are generally more associated with the more radical groups that have been involved in terrorism to further their cause.

How do Roman Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland view their region differently?

When Ireland divided into two countries which part stayed with Great Britain?

In 1922 Ireland was partitioned which created Northern Ireland and what is now the Republic Ireland. Britain and Ireland are separate islands, so no part of Ireland was with Britain, which consists of just England, Scotland and Wales. Ireland was part of the United Kingdom, which consisted at that time for Britain and Ireland, and when the Ireland was divided Northern Ireland stayed a part of the United Kingdom while the rest of Ireland became independent.

Why Northern Ireland as part of British empire and not Ireland?

This is because the majory of people living in it known as unionist want to remain part of the UK. At one stage the whole island of Ireland was part of the Great Britain because the king at the time took control. As time went by only the nothern end of this island wanted to remain part of Great Britain called Ulster.

Why did Ireland give England 6 counties?

Ireland did not give six counties to England. Before 1921, all of Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. When the Irish Free State was formed in 1921, the majority of the population in the six counties wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom. A minority of the population of the six counties wanted to join what is now the Republic of Ireland. The six counties became what is now known as Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is not part of England, but along with England, Scotland and Wales, it is part of the United Kingdom. England and the United Kingdom are not the same thing so don't get it mixed up.

Should England leave northern Ireland?

'England' has nothing to do with Northern Ireland. The full name of the country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Therefore, Northern Ireland is an integral part of the United Kingdom along with England, Scotland and Wales. The people of Northern Ireland held a referendum to decide if they wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom or become part of the Republic of Ireland. They voted overwhelmingly to remain part of the UK. A minority of people still want to be part of the Republic of Ireland but as a democracy, the will of the majority prevails. Incidentally, Northern Ireland has its own Parliament (Stormont) which is able to legislate on most things except for foreign, monetary and military policy.

Why is northern Ireland which is just a little piece of land that hardly seems worth fighting for so damned important to the United Kingdom?

Northern Ireland isn't important to the United Kingdom and costs huge amounts of money to subsidise. However, when Ireland gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1922, the majority of the people of the 'six counties' - Northern Ireland - chose to remain a part of the United Kingdom. At the height of 'the troubles' in the 1970's, a referendum was held and the people of Northern Ireland overwhelmingly voted to still remain part of the UK. There are obviously people there who don't believe in democracy, and in the past have tried to force their will on the majority by using terrorist methods. Thankfully, the people of Ulster are at last learning to live together peaceably.

How did Northern Ireland come under British rule?

Northern Ireland is a part of Britain/United Kingdom. It is not 'controlled' by Britain any more than England, Scotland or Wales are.In fact, it actually has more right to leave the United Kingdom than any of the other parts (due to the Belfast Agreement).
