People do not like jazz, because people listen to music for different things. A jazz aficionado will always point out that jazz is the most challenging form of music. The problem is that most people do not listen to music to be challenged, but to be entertained. As jazz became established, it stopped absorbing outside influences and stagnated.

Rock'nRoll is doing the same thing. All the heavy metal coming out now sounds just like Metalica. In fact, every sub genera sounds like a rehash of something done ten or thirty years ago.

edit: I just wanted to add something pertaining to the way one listens to jazz in particular. Folk, Classical, Rock 'n Roll, and other forms of music do not act on the mind in the same way. There is an anticipation/satisfaction routine to the music. When the listener tries to listen to Jazz in the same way, the listener will only be become frustrated. To enjoy Jazz, the listener has to learn to "unlisten."

A skilled musician has the ability to hear a lot more in music than I can, but I caught a Jazz musician listening to some flat, simplistic, and repetitive stuff that was supposed to be "The Blues." I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions from this observation.

In the 1920's jazz was associated with flappers and the older generation saw it and everything associated with it as a corrupting influence on young people, partly because it was played by black people and also because the new dances were openly sexualised.

The Blues music is a musical genre which started in the late 19th century (1860s-civil war time) sung by enslaved african americans. Along with spirituals, (work songs-early blues) the blues is considered the Musical root of African Americans. They played the blues in theirfree timewhen the slaves were not working. African Americans played the blues as an expression of freedom and sorrow from being enslaved.
