Picasso was commissioned to paint something for the 1937 World Fair, he delivered Guernica. It is an expression of pain, horror, anguish and disgust; what the artist felt after hearing the news of the terrible bombing of Guernica, a town in northern Spain, on April 26 1937 during the Spanish Civil War

Picasso painted Guernica in 1937 during the civil war between Spanish Republicans and General Franco's fascist army. After Franco's Nazi allies heavily bombed the town of Guernica, Picasso painted this work in response to this tragedy and the extensive loss of life.

Picasso loaned this famous painting to the Museum of Modern Art in New York with the stipulation that it be housed there until democracy returned to Spain. In 1981, Guernica was returned to Madrid, where it is in the Reina Sofia.

The Spanish Republic did not ask him to paint it. Picasso was outraged and horrified when he learned about the massacre and did the painting of his own accord while he was living in Paris.
