Beyond the orbit of Neptune, there are uncounted numbers of small icy objects such as Pluto, Sedna, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea. They are similar to both planets and comets and are made largely of frozen gases.

The term "plutoid" is also used to describe these Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs).

Pltuo is so small because sincetists belive that it is really just a chunk of ice and so are Sedna , Eris , Makemake and Haumea!

FYI: Pltuo is really made of ice!

Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet by the IAU in 2006 because of an apparent disparity in the definitions of planets as an increasingly large number of planet-like objects was discovered in the solar system using improved techniques and more powerful telescopes. A new object, Eris, was discovered which was larger than Pluto; Pluto's size was discovered to be smaller than anticipated, and a few objects near its size were discovered which raised the question of what qualifies as a planet and what does not; either those like Pluto would have to be also called planets, or Pluto would have to be reclassified in order to restore consistency of definition.

By the IAU definition, a planet needs to be in solar orbit, have achieved hydrostatic equilibrium, and must have largely cleared its orbit; Pluto failed on the final criterion and was thus 'demoted' leaving only eight true planets.

Pluto formed in the outer reaches of the solar system where there was never enough material to form a large planetary body.

Pluto did notactually disappear it is still in the same orbit as it always was. Scientist have only decided that Pluto is not a planet. Nothing has changed aside from scientific perception.

I think the sun is melting Pluto because we know heat melts ice and snow and since Pluto is made of solid ice this could very well be the case.

Pluto itself did not change, but astronomers information about Pluto has improved. New evidence was considered to show that Pluto qualifies as a planetesimal, not a full-blown planet.
