Reagan ordered the bombing of Tripoli after the CIA determined that Libyan secret forces bombed a night club in West Berlin.

The bombing was the most direct action the U.S. had taken against Libya, but not the first. The U.S. Navy had been engaging Libyan planes and ships in the Mediterranean Sea since 1981 in waters that Libya claimed and the U.S. disputed as international waters.

It is important to note that Gaddhafi, the leader of Libya, was viewed with deep suspicion much in the same way that Saddam Hussein and now Ahmadenajad. All made the same "death to America" saber-rattling speeches.

It may be deduced, if it is not accurate, to say that the 1986 bombing of Tripoli lead to the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103 by Libya.
