King and two other men in the car had been drinking heavily and driving erratically, after a high speed chase by the police, they managed to pull them over. The police stated that King was the most aggressive of the three and the force they used was justified, but it was caught on camera and the footage of this did not look justified. The four officers that beat him with batons caused broken bones and internal injuries. They were prosecuted for assault but were found not guilty, causing outrage and riots across America.

The 1992 Los Angeles riots stemmed from the acquittal of four white Los Angeles Police Department officers in the beating of black motorist Rodney King in 1991.
On April 29, 1992, the jury, which included ten whites, one Filipino American, and one Hispanic, but no African Americans, found the four police officers not guilty on ten of the eleven counts and could not come to an agreement on the other count. The acquittals stunned many persons who had seen the videotape. Within two hours riots erupted in the predominantly black South Central section of Los Angeles. The riots lasted seventy hours, leaving 60 people dead, more than 2,100 people injured, and between $800 million and $1 billion in damage in Los Angeles. Order was restored through the combined efforts of the police, more than ten thousand National Guard troops, and thirty-five hundred Army and Marine Corps troops. To view the entire issue refer to: http://www.answers.com/Rodney+King?cat=technology&gwp=11&method=3&ver=2.3.0.609&au=1
That was the initial allegation by the media, and the edited video clip seemed to support that allegation. However, viewing the FULL un-edited version of the video reveals quite a different picture of the incident and you are left to draw your own conclusion as to the officers motives. All four officers involved were originally acquitted by the state court of any charges. However when federal civil rights violation charges were brought against them, two were convicted, and two were once again acquited. Yes and no. Mr King was already not a model citizen , and did resist somewhat , and I think his being Black was only part of the cause of the over-zealous Police response.
