Thomas Jefferson probably had some of the most impeccable qualifications for President of the United States up to that time. He ran partly because he wanted to fight against the Federalist agenda with which he did not agree.

Thomas Jefferson rose to be President because he was smart and capable, and he knew that by serving as President (having been Secretary of State and Vice President), he could lead the country as well as (if not better than) anyone else at the time.
