Lincoln was a major proponent of the banning of slavery, which was the main platform of Republicans in the 1800's.

Around the time of slavery, there were two prominent parties; Democratic (pro-slavery) and Whig (anti-slavery). After the Whig party ultimately failed, the Republican party took its place, with many of the same fundamentals. Lincoln was definitely anti-slavery, therefore was a Republican.
