Timothy tried to make Phillip independent in "The Cay" because he wanted Phillip to learn valuable life skills, become self-reliant, and be able to survive on his own in case Timothy was not around to take care of him. Timothy wanted Phillip to be able to face challenges and adversity with confidence and resilience.
Phillip is so confused, he doesnt know what to do, and when he is alone with a man he don't know who is, i would understand that+he just lost his mother.
