Paragraph 6 of Section 1 of Article II of the United States Constitution says: "In case of the removal of the President from office, or of his death, resignation, or inability to discharge the powers and duties of the said office, the same shall devolve on the Vice President..."

(Note that the 25th Amendment made some changes to how this part of the Constitution operates, but it was not ratified until more than a century after President Lincoln's death.)
