This is very sad but can happen. Sometimes the mother thinks that the kitten does not belong to her, or she doesn't want it, in some cases this is even because they are so hungry they will eat anything. If the kittens die of weakness/illness the cat may eat it as it is nutritious, just as they will sometimes eat the placenta/afterbirth. If this continues to happen, you may want to consider getting the mother neutered.

She may have suffered a feline form of post-natal depression, if she was a first-time mum she may have been scared and just couldn't cope. Ask your vet for a clearer explanation. This really shouldn't happen though. If the mother didn't like her kittens, then she might have eaten them to get rid of them. It's rather odd behaviour.

This really shouldn't happen. If the mother didnt like her kittens, then she might have eaten them to get rid of them. That is a strange way to get rid of her kittens, but she really wanted them gone. Sometimes a mother cat would take her kittens in the middle of the rode, and get rid of them that way.

Dont listen to any of the above...

Cats act on instinct, as animals do, and this is one of those instinctual responses. If a mother cat senses something wrong with her kittens, e.g. an they are ill/deformed and in danger, she may eat them.

A cat can also react this way if she is stressed and unable to cope with having kittens. It is also said that if there is a strange scent (e.g. a human's scent) on the kitten, then the mother may reject or kill a kitten for that too, though I'm cynical this would be the ONLY reason, especially if it were a domesticated house cat.

Cats are carnivores they will eat a human if they are starving. It's been documented in the news many times when the owner has passed away and the cat chewed on them.

It might have been because the cat was stressed or the kitten was threatening the mother cats health.
