Castles became unimportant when they were no longer able to protect its inhabitants. In the 15 century, artillery such as cannon balls and mortar were able to break through the stone walls.
When the world developed new ideas. Then new building structures came and there was no need of castles that were not long lasting.

Stone castles were good because unlike Motte and Bailey castles they could last longer and they couldn't catch fire as easily even though they they took longer to build.
