first thing is find out what the check engine " light is telling you, Code PO????. then you will get an idea to your question .

I would first suspect low fuel pressure.
You can save gas driving a steep hill by driving the car at a lower RPM.
Just came from a mechanic. Check to see if you have a bad ignition cyliner. This may help. must brake, going up / down steep hill too quickly
Downshift to the next lower gear. If it is very steep, go down another gear. Make sure you don't over-rev the engine though.
Downshift a gear until you have sufficient power without overevving engine.
Most likely clogged fuel filter. Replace filter
is the engine oil low? maybe its flowing to the back of the sump and away from the pick up when you go up the steep hill.

When driving a car with an automatic transmission up a steep hill it is not necessary to shift gears. The car will do that on its own when necessary.
It sounds like the thermostat is opening up late causing the engine to almost overheat before it opens. Replace the thermostat.
You should reverse down a steep incline (slope) when driving a forklift that has a load on the forks.
