Daylights saving time was started to give us an extra hour of daylight in winter when the sun goes down earlier. More daylight leads to a more productive economy, and also keeps people from being depressed during the winter months.
It was started for the farmers. Farmers always needed a designated time to get up and even then there is one or two states that do not have daylight savings time. in the equinox seasons, the sun either stays up longer or shorter. they change the time to make it seem like the same throughout the say so farmers could tell the time just by the suns position without a clock. that way they could go out an come back in with the correct time.
It started so the farmers could have more time to farm when the weather is warm.
To conserve oil, coal, and in the future electricity.
