When light from the Sun enters our atmosphere it gets converted to heat which gets trapped by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor. By burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity, we have been adding extra greenhouse gas to the atmosphere. Over time the average temperature of the Earth increases.
There are various reasons why global warming happens. The main reason is emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which traps the heat into the environment.

Global warming occurs because the greenhouse effect traps the heat from the sun. Increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from our burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity releases carbon dioxide (CO2). This carbon dioxide has been hidden underground for 300 million years, so the carbon cycle is unable to cope with it all.

This is why Global warming is happening. We need to act urgently to prevent the acceleration of Global Warming.

A:It is a natural event. But fossil fuel emissions and even sunspots have been blamed for the cause.

The notion of a static, unchanging environment simply does not apply to a planet with a fluid envelope. Hysteria over climate change represents the lack of scientific knowledge by the public, and the susceptibility of the public for repetition for the truth.

Because when the emissions of car, industry etc rise and add to the greenhouse effect it increases the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the 20th century.

Greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, are gases that help trap the sun's warmth in our atmosphere and maintain the world at a comfortable temperature suitable for human habitation. They . The greenhouse effect is essential to life on earth as we know it. A slight reduction in greenhouse gases would result in global cooling, while a slight increae would result in global warming and climate change.

In the absence of human activity, the amount of carbon dioxide, the most abundant greenhouse gas, remains relatively constant over a long period of time. There is, of course, a recycling of carbon to carbon dioxide and back, as plants take in carbon dioxide, convert it to organic matter, then die and decay (or are burnt in forest fires), once again giving off carbon dioxide, but this natural cycle does not alter the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Human activity is what causes an increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. By cutting down forests for farming, we are releasing carbon into the atmosphere. We also do so in the manufacture of cement. But most of all, we are doing so by burning fossil fuels.

When the Industrial Age began, people were unaware of the role of greenhouse gases and could not have realised that they were beginning a process that would lead to global warming. It was not until the 1970s that scientists began to see a real ong-term trend that they knew came from the gradual increase they were observing in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Global warming is continuing to happen and will probably continue to happen for some time to come, because some people regard the short-term economic benefits of doing nothing as more compelling than the long-term economic, social and environmental benefits of taking immediate and decisive action.

This subject is still somewhat controversial, which means that any answer that I give is going to be revised or added to by someone who disagrees with me, however, the cuurently prevailing theory is that because people have been burning such large quantities of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) over the past few centuries, the atmosphere now has an increased amount of carbon dioxide, and this is what is known as a greenhouse gas; like a greenhouse, it admits the energy of sunlight during the day, but tends to retain that heat at night. That is because it is transparent to visible wavelengths but opaque to infrared radiation.

Global warming is happening because of the two human activities of deforestation (cutting down forests) and burning fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas).

Global warming is caused by human beings who have invented such things as cement, electric power, internal combustion engines and furnaces and water heaters which use oil or gas as fuels.

Cement is made by burning limestone, a process which generates so much carbon dioxide gas (CO2) that it has become one of the major pollutants of the Earth's atmosphere. Then the cement is used to make concrete to create huge and ever-growing cities with their associated urban infrastructure such as buildings, tunnels, roads, railways, sea ports, airports, etc.

Electric power does not arise naturally: it must always be generated. Apart from the relatively small amount of electricity that is currently generated using river dams and waterfalls or using wind-generators, seawater wave-generators or solar cells, one of the main ways to generate electric power at present is to burn fossil-based fuels such as coal, oil or gas. Such fuel burning is another major source of pollution of the Earth's atmosphere.

Human beings use internal combustion engines in vehicles such as cars, trucks, trains, ships and airplanes to travel about, both within and between those cities. They also use furnaces and water heaters, which use oil or gas as fuels, to heat the buildings in those cities. Even air conditioning systemsthat are used to cool buildings must use electricity, as must electric lighting and all the computer and communications systems we now use.

There are four main factors:

  1. The production of cement to make concrete produces a massive amount of pollution, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), which goes straight into the Earth's atmosphere.
  2. The burning of fossil-based fuels - both to generate electricity and to fuel the internal combustion engines in cars, trucks, ships and airplanes - produces a massive amount of atmospheric pollution, not only carbon dioxide (CO2) but carbon monoxide (CO) and various oxides of nitrogen (NOX). The CO and NOX produced in internal combustion engines can be reduced considerably by using cleaner fuels and catalytic converters in cars and trucks but catalytic converters are not currently available for the jet engines as currently used in airplanes.

Nevertheless the CO2, produced in vast quantities by all coal-burning electricity generation stations and by all oil- or gas-based heating systems and fuel-burning engines, remains a major problem.

Those two factors - the production of cement and the burning of fossil fuels - create much more carbon dioxide pollution in our atmosphere than the Earth's natural processes can remove. One of the main natural processes for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere depends on having large forests of trees because trees "breathe in" carbon dioxide and "breathe out" oxygen.

  3. The area of natural forests on the Earth is being greatly reduced by humans who destroy whole rain-forests by burning down the trees to make big fields in which they can plant crops for use as food and fuel. That burning itself produces massive amounts of atmosphere-polluting CO2. Unless this deforestation is stopped there will be too few trees left to convert even naturally-produced carbon dioxide into oxygen. (All animals which breath in oxygen must breathe out CO2 and that is the naturally-produced CO2.)
  4. One consequence of creating massive cities with buildings, tunnels, roads, etc. is that all the concrete that must be used to create the urban infrastructure absorbs and stores the heat from the Sun. As a result the temperature within cities is significantly warmer than in the surrounding countryside.

Global warming is the tendency of earth's atmosphere to heat up. Most of the atmosphere consists of "thermodynamically inert" gas, meaning gas that does not trap much heat. But a small fraction of the gas is good at trapping heat, and behaves like a thermal blanket. Water vapor is the primary heat trapping gas. Variations in heat trapping or "greenhouse" gas concentrations are known to affect earth's rate of heating or cooling.

At the present time human beings emit over 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year, and the increase of this gas is causing earth's average surface temperature to increase, at a time we would normally expect a very slight decline.

There are many "natural" and "ethnographic" (human-induced) factors contributing to climate change. Climate change has always occurred on Earth, which is clearly seen in geological records; This is now a matter of great concern worldwide due to the rapid rate and the amount of climate change that is happening.

it is happening due to increased amount of green house gasses in to atmosphere and due to its effect.

Is the news making global warming sound worse than it is?

Not at all. By giving space to the opposing side, that variously claims that global warming is not happening, is happening but is not a problem, or is happening and is a problem but we have no power to stop it, the news media is unintentionally playing down the problem of global warming. This is a concern for scientists, who say global warming is real but can be stopped if we take decisive action before it is too late.

Should scientists be concerned if they cannot prove that global warming is happening?

Scientists would be relieved if they had not been able to prove that global warming is happening. They could move on and investigate more fruitful areas of science, feeling that at least this is one problem they do not have to worry about. It is because scientists have proven that global warming is happening that they are concerned.
