After his XF plane crash in 1946 he had many wounds that never healed.scared lungs a dislodged heart and broken bones and burns.He lost his hands and forearms in the fire and he was hidden away to protect the friendy skys flyboy image that was painted of him to sell the new air transportion age.He wore fake hands and fore arm covers that could only hang at his sides or be setup for a still shot by makeup artists.Hollywood still makes inside jokes about his fall at his sides useless hands made of rubber.he made many plastic surgerys over the years face lift nose and skin grafts.He used HHMI as his own doctor`s office.
