The 1rst Hokage and Madara Uchiha didn't get along well. So Madara left his clan. Then in the attack by the 9 tailed fox, all the people blamed the Uchihas, because only Madara could control the demon with mongekou sharringgan. And Itachi was born into one of the ninja wars, so Itachi naturally HATED wars. The Hidden leaf village elders backed Itachi into a corner saying that if Itachi didn't go against his own clan there would be another war, on the other hand... Itachi was also being pressured by and family. The Uchiha clan was planning against the Hidden leaf elders. So Itachi was backed into a deep corner by both the Hidden leaf Elders and his family. He decided that he would take the Hidden leaf elder's word and killed his clan with the help of Madara, but the one thing he couldnt do... was to kill sasuke. He loved Sasuke so much that he couldn't do it... afterwards he went to the 3rd hokage and said for him to protect Saskue. But the 3rd Hokage died and Itachi immediently went to check on Sasuke. But Sasuke, thought that Itachi killed his family for power, and killed Itachi. And then later found out Itachi was just trying to protect him. </3 And so now he's trying to kill the elders, and destroy the Hidden leaf village. Hmm, hope this helps! llD

In a nutshell he killed his clan in order to prevent a civil war from occurring in Konoha. The Uchiha clan planned an uprising, as a member of ANBU Itachi was ordered to stop them which he did. He however could not kill his little brother and instead secured him a future protecting him from Danzo and the elders but putting him under the protection of the 3rd Hokage.

Itachi then went to the Akatsuki joining and sending Konoha information about them periodically. As time went on Itachi suffered from some kind of a disease and his sight was failing due to the Mangekyo. However Itachi remained a 'evil' force for Sasuke to strive to beat in order to lead Sasuke to gain his own power to protect himself. In the end it turned out he was a good guy and only wanted to protect his little brother.

Itachi was never evil. He was ordered by the Konoha elders to annihilate his fellow clan members because the Uchiha clan was power-hungry as they were planning a coup detat (overthrow of the government) which would have endangered the safety and security of all of Konoha and not only would million of lives be perished under the Uchiha reign, this internal discord could give the incentive for other nations to attack Konoha's desolate state.

Itachi loved the village and stayed loyal to it until his death. He entered the organization Akatsuki, because he knew it was a major threat to Konoha so he acted as a spy for Konoha. This is who Master Jiraya was referring to when he stated that he had informants concerning the Akatsuki. Nevertheless, Itachi was truly a pacifist and followed the government's orders because he desired peace. If you would look back in the episodes, Itachi fought only when he had to and never tried to kill anyone (besides his clan).

Itachi sacrificed the noble status of a hero to live in effigy and be written down as a villian. However, despite his loyalty to the village, he was unable to kill his brother, Sasuke Uchiha. Sasuke was only an innocent adolescent who was unwillingly and inadvertently entwined with the Uchiha's dismal fate because of his namesake. Itachi loved his brother dearly and only made him seek revenge in order for him to get stronger and find his own path instead of wallowing in Itachi's footsteps. By doing so and giving him the ambition to kill him, Sasuke would not have to live in disgrace and remain proud of who he is and where he came from. He set Sasuke up so that when the time came, he would "defeat him" and be crowned as the man who brought retribution to his clan and be forever revered as the village hero.

When the Uchiha began planning to overthrow Konoha, Itachi, as an ANBU, was tasked with spying on the village. Knowing that a coup d'état would only lead to another Ninja War; Itachi began spying on the Uchiha instead, passing on information to the Third Hokage and the other Konoha elders. During this time he began to act strangely, not attending the clan meetings, speaking out against the clan, and becoming the prime suspect for the murder of his best friend, Shisui Uchiha. Due to this the clan lost hope in Itachi and his father began shifting his focus to Sasuke instead. Meanwhile, the Third's attempts to negotiate a bloodless end to hostilities between the two parties were proving ineffective so, against the Third's wishes, Danzō Shimura and the Konoha Council ordered Itachi to wipe out the Uchiha.

Itachi was living in the Leaf village, as you probably know... Anyway, the Uchiha's were unhappy with the Leaf and Madara returned. The clan had a plot made against the village. Before they could carry it out, the Third Hokage found out and ordered Itachi to wipe out his own clan. Mostly, he followed orders. He only left one Survivor, his brother, Sasuke. After the clan was wiped out, he became a Missing Nin of the Leaf. He later joined up with the Akatusuki with his partner, Kisume, and attempted to help them capture the Bijuu (Tailed-Beast containers). Eventually, he has an all out battle with Sasuke, and he dies from the effects of his Sharingan.
