Why did king Solomon travel?

King Solomon traveled because He had at His disposal, as you can read in the Bible, the Myrrh and the incense of Ethiopia, the wood of cedars from Lebanon, the perfumes of the Orient, and many other things besides....King Solomon did break away from the style King David had initiated, that is a nearly military like life applied to the royal court, an ascetic way of life regarding food, women and the drinks.

King Solomon did understand the importance of foreign politics and oversea alliances.

That is also a reason why He traveled extensively. Not only did He go abroad to control His financial and material assets, as His goldmines in Africa, by the way the DNA of some African people was proven to match the DNA of some Israeli people, but He also went abroad to reinforce His foreign power.

King Solomon was well known, some may add notoriously so, for His numerous spouses and his many descendants. Apart from bringing some fun to Him, marrying as many foreign princesses as possible did ensure the foreign position of the Kingdom of Israel.

Long before General Motors or IBM, King Solomon had made up the first global, multinational power company . He had Indian, Malay, Chinese, well you name it you have it, princesses as His rightfully wedded spouses.

The Queen of Saba was, so to speak, just the tip of the iceberg...

Of course, these princesses and King Solomon 's children had to be protected and looked after. This was the duty of some officers from His Royal Guard, the equivalent of today's British royal Guard or Queen 's Regiment, as an example.
