Many African-Americans turned to the Black Power Movement because they had become disenchanted with the mainstream Civil Rights Movement. They were looking for an outspoken and reactive alternative to the more passive and non-violent predecessor.

The Black Power Movement was caused because the 1960's and 1970's were a time of social reform and protest. Many Blacks were angry because although they had fought and died in Vietnam for American Freedom, they still were not equal. Other groups such as the Black Panthers and Nation Of Islam are part of this movement.
