The French trappers had treated the Native Americans very well compared to the British. Many French trappers had married Native American women, traded with them, and lived with them. The British kept the policy of killing the Natives they found or met. They sold them blankets with smallpox on them and took their land. I think the Native Americans felt that they had a better chance with the French than with the British. It was a much as a political decision as one of survival .
