Several reasons. On September 3, 1951, he was escorting a reconnaissance mission in Korea when his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. His plane collided with a pole about 20 feet above the ground, which sliced off about 2 feet of his right wing. He managed to fly his plane back to friendly territory before being forced to eject. He was picked up on the beach by a friend from flight school.

While working as a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base on March 22, 1956, his plane lost a propellor. One of the blades snapped off the broken propellor and damaged the engine next to it. Armstrong manged to land the plane with one engine.

On March 16, 1966, Armstrong along with his co-pilot Dave Scott, made the first docking in space. Shortly after docking, Armstrong noticed they were in a roll. Armstrong tried to stop the rolling motion, but it continued. Armstrong's first step was to separate from the Agena. When he did that, they started spinning one revolution every second. They were on the verge of blacking out before Armstrong regained control of the spacecraft. Had they blacked out, they would have died in space.

On May 6, 1968. Armstrong was practicing his lunar landing procedures in a vehicle known as the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle (LLRV). As he was making his approach at 100' above the ground, his vehicle began banking. He ejected a half a second before the LLRV exploded. The wind brought him dangerously close to the fireball below, but he managed to land far enough away from the vehilce that he was not injured.

Basaically, every astronaut who has ever flown has had similar experiences. It is the way they handeled those emergency situations that set them apart from the other pilots who were not selected as astronauts.
