Parliament was the British government. This group believed that they could tax the colonists because, technically, they held the power because Parliament basically sent people to the west coast of, what today, is America. Parliament gave the colonist many unjust taxes in major historic events such as, The Proclamation of 1763, The Quartering Act of 1765, The Stamp Act of 1765, The Townshed Act of 1767, The Boston Massacre (1770), The Boston Tea Party of 1773 and Finally, The Intolerable Acts, which proved to be quite Intolerable indeed because it sent the furious Colonists, felling mistreated, over-the-edge and that is how the American Revolution began!
Since the colonies belonged to them, they were justified in all of them. The colonists didn't mind the taxes, they minded that they didn't get any say.
