this trail was highly used at the time and even had trading posts on the trail allowing for purchase of supplies. during this time people went on the trail to go west to escape there troubles in the east and looked to prosper in the west
The Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869 and provided a faster, cheaper, and safer way to travel West. With out the need to worry about Illness starvation And the harsh weather and terrain the Oregon trail was seen no use for and then was abandon.
