The Berlin Wall was patrolled by soldiers on the East German side and they had orders to fire on people trying to climb over the wall to West Berlin.

Because a lot of people crossed the Berlin wall. people wanted to escape communism and Berlin was the best place to do this, people were willing to risk their lives escaping
