They were looking for gold, land, or religious freedom. They didn't find the gold until 1825, when gold was discovered in Dalonegah County, Georgia. People who had no land in Britain wanted land of their own. The Puritans were persecuted in England & came here to establish 'religious freedom,' which meant you were free to practice any religion as long as it was theirs. Maryland was established as a refuge for English Catholics, who were being persecuted in England. Georgia, for a time, was a penal colony. Before Australia was discovered by the English, a lot of English criminals were 'transported' to America. As the country began to settle, a lot of very poor people who couldn't pay their way across the Atlantic came as indentured servants--essentially slaves for a specific period of time to pay the person who financed their voyage the cost of passage by working without pay. And then, of course, there were people who came for the pure adventure of it. TexasCharley
