Many reasons. The first being that the 60's were the begining of a cultural revolution. The youth of the 60's were influenced by the bands and the image and music that these bands portrayed. Also, the lyrics and song writting of that era really mirrored what was happening in the world at that time. Lennon/MaCartney, Dylan, etc., seemed to make music that appealed to people and the changing times. People used the music from these bands as a way to break the confines of society.
Sometimes groups were good to listen to when you smoked pot. Sometimes the bands were just popular. If you wanted to hear surf music you would turn on the Beachboys. If you wanted to hear somebody who you thought had there act together, and the same thoughts that you did about girls, then you'd listen to that. I think people who listen to the 60's music nowadays, are trying to plug in to something that was special to their parents and they want to follow suit, to find out what it is about. Some kids listening to 60's music just dig it. It is music that is timeless in a respect. There was a subtle revolution going on, and a lot of the bands pushed the envelope as much as they could. The Beatles are an example of a band that just knew how to write great music that was easy to listen to. You wouldn't buy the album for one hit, you bought it because every song on the album was good. They had five number one songs on the chart at the same time. They were a modern band, and had a good pace, then, set the pace. They interpreted all aspects of modern day feelings.

Maybe you are talking about the line in You Belong With Me... "I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like." If it's not that, I'm not sure what it would be.
