In Julius Caesar (Shakespeare), Cassius does not like Caesar, and wants to kill him. He persuades Brutus by telling him that Caesar would become ambitious and Rome will suffer.

Caesar was a political official, much like president. Caesar was elected by the Senate to lead both the military and the country of Rome, but was supposed to step down after an allotted time. Julius was not going to step down. It was feared that he was planning to make himself king, something the Senate feared. In actuality, he could not step down because then he would be vulnerable to prosecution from his enemies. As long as Caesar had control of the armies, he was safe.

Caesar had the support of the people because of his successful military campaigns. If he did set himself up as dictator, the Senators would have lost all their power.

The assassination of Julius Caesar was the result of a conspiracy by some Roman senators. The leaders, Gaius Cassius Longinus and Marcus Junius Brutus, stabbed Julius Caesar to death in a location near to the Theatre of Pompey on the Ides of March (March 15), 44 BC. At the time Caesar was the dictator of the Roman Republic. He had recently been declared dictator perpetuo by the Senate. This declaration made many senators fear that Caesar wanted to overthrow the Senate in favor of "tyranny". The conspirators were unable to restore the Roman Republic. The result of the assassination led to the Liberators' civil war and, and then, to the Principate period of the Roman Empire.
