If the "service engine" light is on, your computer has "stored a code", meaning that it has detected a fault and is ready to tell you what it knows. The best way to determine what's wrong is to use a code reader, that way you won't be speculating. Check the compter codes by using a code scanner. It will give you a good idea where to look.

Why would a 1988 Chevy Celebrity speedometer and odometer stop working and engine light blink on and off and turn off when stopped?

The main reason that a speedometer and odometer will stop is because the speed sensor, located on the back top area of the transmission, has gone faulty. The part can be had very easily at any auto parts store, or junkyard. The reason the check engine light is on is because the speed sensor signal goes thru the ECM (computer) for the car to run the different things. If the signal is intermitent, or interupted, the light is set, as well as the speedo and odometer not working.Another reason is that the ECM it's self is bad, you can locate the ECM behind the glovebox and give it a few knocks while the car is running, if your engine responds by cutting out (even just a little) then replace it. they are around $110.Since there is no speedo cable, it must be an electrical issue with a sensor.QuestionWhy is there no speedometer cable? Does it have digital gauges? The reason I ask, is, when I first got my 1986 Celebrity, the speedometer and odometer did not work. The previous owner had bought a new speed sensor, but had not had it put in yet. I installed it first thing. no luck. In checking the speedometer cable, I found it was broken, (the end of the cable at the tans-axle). After I replaced the speedometer cable, it worked fine. Now, I cannot imaging gm did away with speedometer cables in the two years before the 1988 came out. I do have a 1990 S-15 with digital gauges, and I know it does not have a speedometer cable. But, the 1990 Sunbird I used to own, with analog gauges, did have one.

How to disable the odometer on a 2005 Honda Accord LX?

== == Get a shop manual or download one and figure out where the speed sensor is. On older accords it was right on the transmission. Unplug that and your odometer will no longer work. However your speedometer wont work either, your cruise control wont work, and your cars check engine light will illuminate. However be it known that in some states and jurisdictions It is illegal to disable the odometer. It is called fraud.

How do you reset the odometer on 1998 Pontiac Sunfire?

AnswerThe 98 Pontiac stores the odometer in the instrument panel cluster. The odometer can be reprogramed either by the dealer or there are companies that will re-program it for you (seach google, there are lots). Or you can buy the odometer programmer for about $1000 but its cheaper to just send the cluster module in. (not only is it legal to reset the odometer; its required in most states when you replace the engine. The odometer is required to reflect the mileage of the engine *NOT* the vehicle)

Speedometer not working and the service engine light keeps coming on what might it be?

1996 and later Explorers use an electronic speedometer which is operated by a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) The powertrain control module also uses the vehicle speed sensor input signal for several different engine and transmission control functions.

How do you fix a odometer on your 1995 Nissan 200 se-r?

This is based on my experience with a 1995 200 sx se. I assume they are similar. The se uses the 1.6 engine and the se-r the 2.0. engine. The odometer runs on the same electronic gear driven sensor as the speedometer so if the speedometer is working and the odometer is not the problem is in the "Speed head" (speedometer unit in the dash). Mine and several others I have seen break at about 40,000 and will need replacing but first; If neither are working try to set your Cruise control. If it "goes wild" with clicks etc. and does not work the problem is likely the speed sensor located on the transmission. Find it on top on the transmission rear the fire wall. One set screw hold a small retaining plate. Remove it and pull straight up. The nylon gear wears out and causes it to not contact the drive gear anymore.

Possible speed sensor issue. Have it checked for trouble codes to know what to diagnose.

If a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport speed sensor went out and you replaced it why would your speedometer and odometer still not work and the check engine light be on?

Borrow or buy an engine code scanner to find out what code is stored. The fact that the "check engine light" is on is a huge clue. That may give you all of the information that you need to figure out what's wrong.
