The Egyptians went through great lengths to preserve the dead bodies of people because they believed there was an afterlife. They didn't want the bodies to decompose because they would be used again.

The modern concept of a disembodied soul does not appear to have reached the Mediterranean area until around 600 BCE, following the arival of Zoroastrianism among the peoples of western Iran. The early Egyptians believed in a form of spiritual afterlife, but this required the body to be preserved.

The Egyptians preserved bodies through embalming because the Egyptians believed that there was an "afterlife"(life after death) thus made Egyptians embalm a body. Embalming is another word for mummifying. To mummify a body, Egyptians would first break the nose so they could pull out the brain through the nose with an embalming hook. A neat slit was made on the left side of the abdomen where the liver, intestine, and lung was taken out. The heart was left behind. Then, they would stuff the body with a salt called naton, which would dry out the body. The drying process lasted 40 days. (Lower classes of people would just dry out the body in a desert. This took longer but it still worked.) The body was then stuffed with linen to make the mummy appear "plumper". The they would cover the body in a sticky substance called resin to harden the body. The wrapped in a layer of linen. Then placed amulets. Wrapped another layer of linen. Placed on a death mask, placed in a sarcophagus the a wooden coffin.

What process was used to preserve bodies?

I believe they extracted most of the internal organs through surgery. They threw away all of them but the heart and a few others that they believed vital in the afterlife. They preserved the heart, etc. in jars of some kind of preserving liquid to be put in the tomb with the money. Then they dried the body and wrapped it in bandages soaked in the same preserving liquid (some form of formaldehyde, maybe?). I think.
