One important reason Europeans sought a water route to the Far East was simply a safety concern. Overland travel at that time was very dangerous due to the presence of bandits and difficulties with much of the terrain.

During the early age of exploration, spice and Asia exotic products (silk, porcelain, etc) have been monopolized by either the Venetians, who controlled most of Mediterranean shipping lanes and the Muslim Ottoman empire, who held the fabled spice/silk routes either sold the said goods at extortionate prices or refused to sell to infidel Christian states. To counter this, maritime nations such as Portugal and Spain looked for alternative routes to break this monopoly or gain access to cheaper Asian goods. This financial expedition together with the Pope's support has fueled this adventurous endeavor.

The Italians had a monopoly on Mediterranean trade.

Traders refused to carry silk or cinnamon.

They had ships that desperately needed employment.

Ottoman Turks had captured Constantinople.

Extremely high prices were caused by the difficulty of moving Eastern goods to Europe.

Ships traveling water routes could carry more goods.
