It happened because of the peasants displeasure with the way the government and the king worked. The king was seen as ineffective and indecisive. The root cause was the huge French National debt that Louis XVI had inherited and the cost of such things as the French support for the American Revolution which was accompanied by high taxation and an unfair tax code. A popular uprising then took place called the Storming of the Bastille.
