The French via what is now Canada had fur expeditions and the British begin to move in via crossing the Appalachians in search of wealth. In 1750, British and French representatives met in Paris to try to solve these territorial disputes, but no progress was made.
By the 1740's English traders were crossing the Appalachian Mountains in search of furs. Pushing into the Ohio Valley, they tried to take over the profitable French trade with the Indians. France was determined to stop the English from expanding westward. The Ohio River was important to the French because it provided a vital link between their lands in Canada and their settlements along Mississippi river.
