∙ 8y agoThey left because of Joseph. You might have heard of Joseph and his brothers who were very jelous because their father loved Joseph more. The brothers sold Joseph as a slave, and told the father that he was killed. Later on, Joseph becomes a very well known man in Egypt because he could tell what dreams mean. He saves Egypt from a famine because he could tell from the Pharoh's dream that there would be seven years of famine. People from all over the land came to Egypt for food. When Joseph met his brothers there, they said that they were extremely sorry. They brought the rest of the family, and settled in Egypt. The Pharoh was good to them, and they continued to live there. When there were more Jews there, the Pharoh died and another Pharoh came in and was cruel to the Jews.
This does explain a lot, but it's not really answering the question: The Israelites first of all left Cannan because a bad drought struck and they didn't have any water or food. They chose Egypt because Egypt's land is very fertile because of the Nile River. But yes,the Pharaoh was very cruel to the Israelites(or Jews), they were enslaved.

∙ 9y agoBecause of famine (Genesis ch.46). It was part of God's plan, since Egypt would be the "iron furnace" (Deuteronomy 4:20) in which the Israelites would be smelted, removing the dross, and would grow into a nation ready to receive God's Torah.
