America was more affluent than Sicily, so there was more money to be made by illegal actions. America had a higher standard of living, so that Mafia chieftains would be able to live a fancier lifestyle than ones in Sicily. Another is that the Italian immigrants were discriminated against by persons of established nationalities. They were not properly protected by the police and would be easy prey for Mafia criminals.

The Mafia is a criminal organization on an international basis founded originally in Sicily but known in other parts of Italy and borderline countries such as France and Gambling ops in Monaco, for example. Sometimes it is also called the Cosa Nostra 9This thing of ours) which may itself be a corrupted version of Casa Nostra-Our House again implying a closely-held clan-like business. In most forms of the organization Italian nationality is a sine qua non for membership and (Outcrosses) those who would marry outside the tribe, can only rise so far in the structure- the Glass Ceiling used to be Coronello Del Mafia- or Colonel of the Mafia. if one married, say someone of another nationality (who was not, by any means a female gangster). Mafia activities are heaviest in Sicily where the organization began, not only Regular police but Carabinieri (Lit riflemen- actually State trooper-like Police agents) have hands full in containing the problem in Sicily Mafia activity has spread to mainland Italy, the United States, and borderline European countries such as France and gambling-oriented Monaco. The Mafia came to the Us to expand its crime activiity at one time known as the Black hand or Mano Nera in Italian. Some of ther earliest crime-fighting ac tions of the now-century old F.B.I were directed at the Mafia, largely trhogh the New Orleans Field office long before Chicago and Capone"s gangs. The Mafia itself dates to Feudal times in Italy and is said to (Keep the Feud in Feudalism) A ong other things they object to paying taxes, which 9Axed) Al Capone when the Feds caught on.

Why are the Mafia Bad?

Actually the Mafia, other than their use of violence and murder, is no different from many other corporations in America. The leaders of the Mafia, were also much like the early founders of the United States. The robber barons of the late 1800's were worse than the mafia chieftains.
