This is incorrect. Jews did not judge the Christian Reformation at all. They avoided making any remarks in fear that the violence that Catholics and Protestants were perpetrating against one another would be redirected into pogroms in the Jewish ghettos.

As for the Jews "taking sides" in the Reformation, there was no reason for Jews to favor the Catholics (who were at the apex of Spanish Inquisition and Jew-baiting throughout Europe) or for Jews to favor the Protestants (who were led by rabid Anti-Semites like Martin Luther who wrote "On the Jews and Their Lies"). The first major Christian world leader that Jews rallied behind was Napoleon Bonaparte because of his acts in emancipating the Jews.
