Missouri applied to be admitted as a slave state, and if admitted, would:

A: Tip the balance of the federal Senate to the slave states, 24-22

B: Create a large lump of slave-permitting territory jutting out into the plains.

Northerners didn't want the Senate to get off balance, and also didn't want the South to use Missouri as a springboard to creating more slave states in the plains.
