Best Answer

The Mormons had faced severe religious persecution across the east and Midwest - including New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. After petitioning to the US government for assistance or protection and being denied (the President famously declaring "Your cause is just but I can do nothing for you"), the violence only intensified. The state of Illinois asked them to leave in order to preserve the public peace. The Mormons decided the best course of action would be to move across international borders into Mexico, where they would live in a land deemed "uninhabitable" for white men, where only native tribes could be found. Here they would be able to live autonomously without interference from the government or persecution from outsiders.
