This was because Britain was abusing them and taxing them without even presenting the colonists the taxes they had to pay. Also, they wanted to start a new life or practice their religion freely.

They wanted to break away from Britain because of a couple of reasons, mainly 3:

1. They thought that the taxes and acts (laws) were unfair.

2. They thought that because Britain fought for themselves in the French and Indian War, they should pay for it themselves.

3. They were in salutary neglect so long that they were used to having a lot of rights, they weren't used to having other people making rules for them.

-I sort of guessed the last one and made it up on the spot, but is should be the general idea. The others are definitely right.

What was the British response to the Declaration of Independence and why?

The Declaration of Independence was like a declaration of war, stating that they want to have their own free nation and do whatever it takes. The British responded with war, because they didn't think they needed to change their laws. Great Britain had owned all the colonies, and the patriots were requesting to get their own nation. So overall, the British own all 13 colonies, but the patriots don't WANT that, so the British responded with: War because: They wanted to keep the colonies.
