In a manner of speaking, the Roman soldiers and the ancient Roman military based on discipline and obedience to their commanders. Basically, by following orders from legion commanders, success was most of the time assured. In addition, there was punishment for various soldier offences such as falling asleep while on guard duty. Commanders had the authority to set punishment against any soldier who failed to follow orders.

∙ 9y agoFor some 600 years the Roman army was a citizen militia and the soldiers were farmers. The landless poor were not drafted. In 107 BC a shortage of recruits led to reforms which opened up the army to the landless poor. A career of 16 years and a grant of a sizable lump sum of money or a plot of land to farm on discharge were established. The poor flocked to the army attracted by pay and the grant. This was not a professional army yet. The soldiers were drafted when needed. Augustus professionalised the army by having soldiers serve all year round. This was needed to man the garrisons along the vast frontiers of the empire regularly
