The construction of the Colosseum in just eight years was made possible by the use of the three key elements of what had been called the Roman architectural revolution which enabled the Romans to go beyond the Greek post-and-lintel system of constructing buildings: concrete, the arch and the vault. The core of the structure was made with Roman concrete (which was different than modern concrete), which was covered with stone and stucco (a type of plaster) because concrete was unsightly. This was a complex underground structure with 12 curved tunnels on the sides of a central passageway. The gladiators and caged animals were housed there prior to the show.
