∙ 10y agoAugustus came along at the right time for acceptance by the Roman people. They had just gone through roughly a hundred years of civil wars, repressive dictatorships, two proscriptions, and the death of many of their young men on the battlefield. In other words, they were sick and tired of the political turmoil and welcomed the establishment of the principate and the prosperity that the Pax Romans afforded them. To be sure, Augustus had to deal with plots and conspiracies, but for the most part, the Romans people of all classes were content to let him rule.

∙ 13y agoThey were willing to accept a one man rule because they were sick and tired of almost a hundred years of civil wars. However, Augustus did not just barge in and say he was a king or dictator. He had been granted supreme power by the senate in his war with Cleopatra and upon returning to Rome offered to return the power. The senate allowed him to keep the most import ones. In this way he eased out the republic while easing in the principate.
